Data Privacy
We use patron data in two ways. First, your library card registration data. Second, your email address if you register for programs or email lists.
Library Card Registration Data
Library card registration information is subject to strict confidentiality laws. These laws apply to:
- items you check out
- websites you visit using public computers
- database searches
- library materials you consult
The only time we will disclose such information are in the following situations:
- Staff acting within the scope of their duties in the administration of the library or library system.
- People authorized by the individual to inspect the individual’s record.
- A custodial parent or guardian who requests library records relating to the use of the library documents or other materials, resources, or services by their child under the age of 16.
- An agency or individual or any local, state or federal government, pursuant to a process, subpoena or court order authorized pursuant to a federal, state, or local law relating to civil, criminal, administrative or legislative investigative power. Library staff will seek legal counsel from the City of Appleton Attorney’s Office in the event of such a request for release of library records and will respond to the request according to advice of counsel.
- We may disclose your registration information to third-party service providers. This includes interlibrary loan providers, our collection agency and digital content providers. This is solely to facilitate the provision of library services. We’ll ensure the service providers comply with data protection and privacy requirements.
Email Address Data
If you share your email address with us, we’ll use it for the intended purpose. You may remove your email from our lists at any time by clicking unsubscribe at the bottom of the email.
