March 19, 2009 - coordinated by Sue Abrahamson, Waupaca Area Public Library, OWLS Youth Services Coordinator - 5 contact hours
Statewide assessments of reading achievement show that the proportion of students proficient in reading declines as they move from elementary and middle school to high school. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Division for Libraries, Technology and Community Learning, has launched a multi-year initiative that will champion high-quality teen services and build momentum behind Wisconsin's drive to create the most literate, well-educated citizenry and workforce in the nation. This workshop is part of that initiative.
Public librarians are encouraged to invite school partners (middle and high school librarians, school district reading specialists or administrators, etc.) to this workshop as one of the activities is to conduct an action planning session where activities and events may be planned for individual communities. Participants will leave with concrete ideas on making connections with schools to provide support through programs, outreach, etc.
